Dream lofty dreams; and as you dream, so shall you become. Your Vision is the promise of what you shall one day be; your Ideal is the prophecy of what you shall at last unveil. – James Allen, “As a Man Thinketh”
Representing the threshold over which I cross “To the Books: A Writer, Her Tools, & Her Process” is an endeavor to take one’s private musings, the significant details that shape me as an English Teacher, as a Writer, as a Yoga Enthusiast, and as a Finish Line Crosser (through various running adventures), public. It’s the journey on which I embark to make sense of life experiences so that they fit into bigger narratives in both fiction and nonfiction.
The Dream: Writing a Book
Tucked at the center of my being, for as long as I can remember, writing a book has always been a dream.
Finally, after a variety of events that cleared my path of distractions, I sat down with my plot, characters, setting, and plan. Writing, writing, writing – the word count grew. However, I noticed that much of the material populating my book came from personal experiences. The unfolding of the book writing became marred with other vignettes and insights that arose. Much like a tree whose roots and branches naturally found their own directions so too were my musings.
Thus, the idea of this project was born. My tools, running, hiking and yoga, my process, stealing daily details from my classroom teaching days and compiling the stories behind the story, they need a space to live in the public sphere as much as the fictional piece that is being woven.
